Oil cleansing is a super trendy topic right now, and something I see a lot of people talking about - sometimes they're saying good things and sometimes they aren't!

There's definitely some controversy over oil cleansing, and some professionals love it and some don't love it so much. But I, personally, think it is amazing.

So what is oil cleansing anyway? Simply put, it is cleansing your skin with oil. Sounds weird right? Well not so fast - here is why oil cleansing is my preferred skin cleansing method:

  • Extremely effective clean (chemistry principle - like attracts like)

  • Gentle on all skin types

  • Non-stripping, non-drying, non-irritating

  • Adds nourishment to the skin from the properties of the oil you are using

  • Removes makeup SUPER well

One of the best things about oil cleansing is that anyone can do it - YES even if you have oily skin!! In fact, I highly recommend this method for those of you with oily skin because of the fact that an oil cleanser will dissolve oil and dirt deep within your pores to get a super effective and thorough clean without stripping the skin of moisture.

There are two types of oil cleansers out there: ones with emulsifiers, meaning they have an ingredient that allows the oil to mix and dissolve with water, and ones that are pure oil with no emulsifier. I tend to like the emulsifying ones for oily skin types (less oil residue) and the pure oil for those with dry/mature skin.

How to properly use an oil cleanser:

  • always apply your oil with dry hands to a dry face. This can be your first cleanse and makeup remover, so no need to remove makeup beforehand.

  • If you're using an emulsifying oil: massage oil into dry skin, add water to hands, emulsify on the face, and rinse clean. Follow with a second cleanse if desired and the rest of your skincare routine as you would normally.

  • If you're using a pure oil: massage oil into dry skin, use a warm wet wash cloth to gently sweep away excess oil, flip wash cloth to the clean side with more warm water for a final sweep of excess oil. Follow with a second cleanse if desired, or use a hydrating or purifying toner to remove excess oil before continuing with your routine.

My favorite cleansing oils! These all have emulsifiers in them - you can get any type of pure oil that you like (see my YouTube vid on how to choose a face oil for your skin type here).

Let me know in a comment if you have tried oil cleansing, do you like it? What oil cleansers do you love/hate?

Xoxo,

Lauren
